The focal point of many towns and villages in Austria is the main square. This differs from village to town to city. In Wels, the main square is the Stadtplatz. This is the heart of the entire downtown area.

The Stadtplatz is a marvelous place to wander. It features old historic structures and captivating facades. In fact, there are some 64 Baroque facades in this square. These facades all front older, Gothic structures. At the Western end, you can see the only surviving tower of the old city fortification walls –the Lederturm. It dates from 1618. At the eastern end of the square, you will find the elegant Stadtpfarrkirche. Be sure to admire the paintwork on house number 24 in the Square. It dates back to 1570. Part of the square is the Rathaus or Town Hall. It is located in a Rococo imperial yellow building at 1748. There is the Christopher Wells house at 39 with its ornate window frames. The square is also home to the infamous Haus der Salome Alt. She was once the mistress of the great Archbishop of Salzburg.
