There are many different types of Castles in the Salzburger region of Austria. They run the gamut of types. These include many elegant Baroque and sumptuous Rococo structures. There is a near Kaprun, the largest ruin complex in the Pinzau region. It sits on a cliff edge outside of the town. Once a mighty fortification, it faced total annihilation in the 18th century. Since 1984, it has found a new role. The Castle Association and the Cultural Association of Kaprun stopped the decay process. It is now a cultural center.

Schloss Kaprun came into existence in the 12th century, but building continued until at least the 15th. It is a simple two- tower structure. The square building and towers reflect a more Romanesque and Gothic than a Baroque approach. Inside, you will find other evidence of its Romanesque origins. There is a fish-bone pattern vault. The great hall is large, stretching 56 meters in length. The castle has a red tiled roof. A bailey wall acts as a protective measure, enclosing the eastern side. Try to arrange your visit in time for the Kaprun Castle Festival. For two days a year, you can become part of the Medieval world of knights and ladies.
