The Heimatmuseum in Zell am See is worth a visit if just to admire its place of residence. You can locate the museum in the old Vogtturm. The Vogtturm is an old Medieval tower dating from the 13th century. It is in the center of town on the Stadtplatz.

The Heimatmuseum is typical for the purpose it serves. It addresses the local history of Zell am See and displays artifacts relating to this past. There are the usual stuffed animals as well as exhibits of minerals and antique skis. Many of the exhibits focus on the traditions of the region. These include costumes. Of particular interest are the locally carved Krampus masks. These are worn on December 5th, the Eve of St. Nicholas Day. The citizens place these devilish looking, horned masks upon their faces and run through the streets of Zell am See. You can still purchase these hand-carved items in the town.
