REVIEW A picturesque antique wooden lift with a bench seat wheezes its way up to this 4th-floor hostel, a terrific cheapie in Barcelona's most expensive neighbourhood. Some of the singles are barely big enough to fit a bed but the doubles are large, light and airy. Some rooms have great views over Barcelona's grandest street which is less noisy at night than by day as the street fills with shoppers. This is one of Barcelona's most distinguished and unusual old buildings and the sweeping wrought-iron staircase at the entrance yields to a stunning circular well running up to the roof, which is adorned with understated but beautiful relief designs. Not all the rooms remain in their original form but even the renovated rooms are attractive and lovingly maintained. The owners are friendly and run a tight ship. They are as happy attending to your whims, as they are about being discreet about your comings and goings.
