Located on a small square next to Via Laietana, the Hostal Layetana is literally right around the corner from the Gothic Quarter and the city's cathedral. In fact, when you stand on the little, wrought-iron balconies you gaze upon remnants of the old Roman city wall and the spires of the gothic cathedral. Unfortunately, this historical and stylish ambiance doesn't continue in the hostel itself. The rooms are rather small and decorated in uninspired, brown tones. Despite the lacklustre décor, the rooms are clean, basic and sufficient for guests who want to spend most of their time out and about. Guests have the option of renting a room with or without bath, and all of the rooms are non-smoking and have central heating and fans in the summer. The small lounge has a TV and a white, 1940s style bar nook surrounded by lilac, velour armchairs. There is a telephone at reception, an elevator in the building and a public parking facility right next door. The staff are friendly but not overly attentive and speak Spanish, German, French, Italian, Portuguese, Catalan, Dutch and English at various levels of proficiency (depending who is on duty). The hostel does have very reasonable rates, which is definitely a plus considering the many tempting shops, restaurants and bars in the nearby Gothic Quarter and the ultra-chic Born that will be competing for your extra cash.
