One of the most beautiful churches you will ever see is the Abbey of Saint Gummarus in Lier, Belgium. This is one of the most striking examples of the Brabantine gothic style of architecture. The church you see there today was built to replace one from the year 1000 – an older Romanesque affair. Take a good look at the Tower of the Saint Gummarus church. It is the oldest part of the building and dates from 1378. It wasn't always considered to be that inspiring in terms of height until 1702 when the tower was raised to a height of 80m.

You can actually tell by looking at the tower the different stages of construction as the later addition is more traditional and is not gothic. The choir for Saint Gummarus church was completed between 1475 and 1516, with the nave, transept and side chapels dating from the 16th century. The truly outstanding rood loft will draw your attention when you enter the church. And, the stained glass windows are stunning.
