Without a doubt one of the greatest of all time painters was Peter Paul Ruebens. His works are legend and he lived in Antwerp, Belgium on a little side street off the Meir Avenue. He bought an existing 16th century house and lived there from 1616 until his death in 1640. But it's not just that fact that he lived there that makes this a landmark in Antwerp, it's what he did with the house. He embellished it and turned it into one of the most breathtakingly elegant Renaissance-Baroque houses of the low countries. Included in the renovations were a splendid garden and front entrance.

It was this house in Antwerp where Rubens created most of the Baroque paintings. Interesting note: his wife (Isabella Brant) and daughter both died in this house. After Ruebens died his house was sold and it didn't fare too well. In 1937 the badly damaged house was bought by the city and restored to its former glory. You will now find the Rubens House Museum there, and a superb collection of original Rueben's paintings on display.
