The Grote Markt, Antwerp is considered to be the heart of this old city and a truly beautiful heart it is. It is surrounded by the striking architecture of the Town Hall and the "houses" of the Guilds or corporations. Of course no town square would be complete without a magnificent church (Our Lady's Cathedral) adding its divine presence. The Guild houses are not the original ones as most of this marketplace was razed by fire in 1576, so the rebuilding was in the Flemish Renaissance style and done by Hans Vredeman.

Thanks to the passage of time and the elements, the houses in the square were renovated again and what a result! Look for Number 7 – the house of the Guild of Archers that is crowned with the statue of St. George. Or Number 25 a reconstruction of a house that used to stand at the Meir (the busiest shopping street in Antwerp) is now on the spot where an Inn used to be. Since traffic was banned from this square it has become a wonderful place to shop, browse, sit and commune with each other and a bottle of cold beer. It's an amazing landmark just begging to have its picture taken.
