Although the Antwerpen-Dam railway station was once considered to be a halt on the railway line, it is now becoming more than that for travelers who wish to see Belgium by rail. Built in a distinctive Flemish Renaissance style in 1892, this particular building once contained the station offices. In 1907 the building was moved to its present site to make way for a swing bridge over a nearby canal. The original building is currently occupied by a restaurant and a social club for retirees, and stands beside the final section of the railway tunnel enclosing the new rail line beneath Antwerp Central (north from Berchem). This new line will mean no further need to reverse and the line will become a through line. An excellent way to sightsee, taking the railway will get you places you might not otherwise see. The Antwerpen-Dam station also is an excellent piece of Belgium history worth exploring while you are perhaps waiting on another connection.
