The cathedral of St Gudule and St Michael’s history spans 12 centuries and is considered to be one of the most interesting archeological sites. Recent excavations here have revealed the remains of walls attributed to the original collegiate church some 12 centuries previous (around about the time of the Norman conquest). Beneath the nave and transept only, archaeologists have found bones from earlier tombs that have been carbon-14 dated between the late 8th century and the late 9th century and between the second half of the 10th and the early 11th centuries. This cathedral has played witness to a number of significant historical events and is a remarkable building to tour
