The church Notre Dame of Laken in Brussels, Belgium, was built in 1854 by King Leopold I who wished to commemorate the death of his wife Louise-Marie of Orléans. Louise-Marie of Orléans was Belgium's first queen. Interesting note: although construction started in 1854, it actually continued until 1908. By the way, the suburb of Laken in Brussels is where the royal family of Belgium lives in the Royal Residence.
The church Notre Dame of Laken was designed and built by Joseph Poelaert, the same man who designed the Brussels Palace of Justice. In the cemetery of Laken you can still see the choir of the old medieval church that used to be there. This is a great cemetery to tour because of the many tombstones and markers bearing statues – i.e. one statue you will find there is an original Thinker of Rodin. In the church look for the royal crypt only open to the public on special occasions like the anniversary of the death of one of the kings buried there, All Saints Day and Dynasty Day.
