Bruxelles-Midi / Brussel-Zuid (Brussels South) is considered to be a major railway station in Belgium. As you can tell by the station's name, the bilingual nature of the city (French/Dutch) is reflected in the sign that bears its name. This station sees more that 1,200 trains between Brussels-South and Brussles-North. That's a lot of traffic and tells you immediately it's one of the bet ways to get around the area if you are wanting to do some serious sightseeing or shopping.

Bruxelles-Midi / Brussel-Zuid (Brussels South) was designed in 1869 by Payen and was actually opened then as well depsite a former station being in existence since 1840 in the southern part of the city. The Station des Bogards/Bogaardenstation was torn down simply because it was way too small to be an effective travel hub for passengers. Then in 1949 the railway station met its demise and was replaced by the now yellow building with a clock tower because of the North-South project. The North-South Junction is a railway link through the centre of Brussels that connects the major national and international railway stations in the city. It is line 0 (zero) of the Belgian rail network. It has six tracks and is used principally for passenger trains. It is partially underground (around Brussels Central station) and partially raised above street level.
