For a walk in the park while you are in Brussels, Belgium, chose the Cinquantenaire park (Jubelpark in Dutch). You won't regret the choice. It has a marvelous history starting in 1180 when Belgium celebrated 50 years of independence. The King at the time, King Leopold II thought to have a world exhibition in Brussels on the former military exercising grounds called the Linthout Plains. This was just outside the center of the city. The idea of the exhibition was to show the world how important Belgium had become.

Thanks to acquiring the Congolese colony in Africa in the second half of the 19th century, King Leopold II had lots of money at his disposal. He used a great deal of it to realize Cinquantenaire Park, complete with its imposing monuments. The park focus is the triple arch and located by this arch are three museums well worth visiting after your park tour – The Royal Museum of Art and History, the Royal Army and Military History Museum and Autoworld. Interesting note: every year the 20km Brussels run is started in the park and it usually attracts at least 25,000 runners.
