Grote Markt Square Details
The Grand'Place is simply one of the most stunning attractions you will ever see in your travels. Perhaps even one of the most beautiful town squares in the whole world. In French this major attraction is called Grand'Place and in Dutch it is called de grote Markt. It isn't just modern days citizens and travelers that call this European town square majestic and amazing. Archduchess Isabella of Spain was known to refer to the square as exquisite and the decoration on the houses remarkable. You'll see Guild houses, an impressive Town Hall with spires piercing the skies, and even the King's house. Despite its evident majesty, the beginnings of the Grand'Place are exceedingly humble.
The site of the Grand'Place was formed on a sand-bank between two brooks that ran downhill to the river Senne. This area rapidly became a major trading crossroads with English wool, French wines, and German beer forming a bulk of the market and sold on the harbor and in the market. In the Middle Ages small wooden home were sprinkled around the market, but with the advent of rich and powerful families, the market became the main commercial area and the seat of government. The Town Hall was started in 1402 and finished in 1455 and was considered the political center where meetings were held, where executions were carried out and where royalty was received. The Grand'Place is a town square that will reveal all its secrets to the visitors wanting to share its rich history.
