CHU de Liege was actually created under the French early in the 19th century. So it has been part of the University since its inception in 1817. In 1896 CHU de Liege was built at Boulevard of the Constitution. Just on the outskirts of the city, another hospital was also built, Hospital of Bavaria. Hospital wards at the time replaced the Hospice of Bavaria (circa 1603). The Faculty of Medicine and the Committee of Public Assistance have coexisted/worked with the CHU de Liege for over 87 years.

The Committee of Public Assistance began organizing and managing various facets of the hospital's and the university provided medical services to those in need. Just after the second WW, it became apparent the Hospital of Bavaria was just too small to meet the demands placed on it by the community and also train doctors and specialists. In 1960 the university decided to build its own teaching hospital in the field of Sart Tilman. A good choice of location as it was able to accommodate the various faculties scattered about many sites in Liege. With roughly 635 beds, this hospital is the major focal point of the communities medical needs.
