Compared to some of the older Belgium universities, Hasselt University (with campuses in Hasselt and Diepenbeek) is relatively new. It was inaugurated in1971 with the name Limburg Universitair Centrum. It has an interesting academic history in that until 1990/91 it was an undergraduate level university with two faculties: the Faculty of Medicine-Dentistry and the Faculty of Sciences. Then in 91/92 the university expanded by adding the Limburg Business School (Economische Hogeschool Limburg), into the Faculty of Applied Economics. This was a good thing for the University as it meant they could set up postgraduate programs in its three Faculties and award doctoral degrees. In 2005 the university changed its name to Hasselt University.
Interesting note: the University of Hasselt and Maastricht partner together as the Transnationale Universiteit Limburg offering courses in IT and Biomedical Sciences. Even though the Hasselt University is technically located in Diepenbeek (near Hasselt) it is expanding rapidly towards Hasselt (capital of Limburg).
