Genk is both a city and a municipality in the province of Limburg, Belgium and it is one of the most important industrial city in Flanders. Little remains of the early city of Genk, which was converted to Christianity in the 10th Century. Until the dawn of the 20th Century, the city was just a small unimportant village. Genk attracts a fair amount of tourists, and is known as one of the most tourist friendly cities. Many of them go to see the Bokrijk or Open Air Museum, which contains relocated but authentic Genk buildings from the 17th to the 19th centuries. In the summer scenes from those periods are reenacted to bring historical Flanders alive.
The De Maten sports/nature reserve is well worth a visit, as are the old, defunct coal mines where some of the houses and other mine buildings are open to visitors. Shopping is good in Genk, and there is a village that is just given over to that pastime. You can fly to Liege airport and then get the train from there to Genk. There are plenty of hotels in Genk, where you can be sure of a comfortable room and a warm welcome.
