The Orval : Musée Historique et Monastique de l'Abbaye d'Orval, located in Villers-Devant-Orval, province of Luxembourg, Wallonia, Belgium is in a very interesting location. It is underneath the current basilica and in what was once 18th century cellars. It is nine rooms that host various collections, including ironwork, firebacks, stalls, and even paintings. The exhibits are very complete and quite well preserved.
You will also be able to see two unique models. The first one is the 12th century Abbey and the second model is of the Abbey in the 18th century. Interesting note: the second model is a maquette of the current day building and it follows the plans that its architect (Henri Vaes) drafted. Over time some of his work was altered, but in essence, what you see today is what Vaes intended to be a lasting monument. It was a stroke of financial genius when the town decided to use the nine cellar rooms, floor them and open a museum. Don't miss out on touring the pharmacy building in this same complex. A stand alone building (museum) of the old pharmacy of the Abbey.
