The Bailiff's House actually dates from the first half of the 16th century. It was tradition at that time for the bailiffs of the town of Braine to live in this building. During the more ancient times of history in Belgium, the bailiff was the "go to" person who took care of things like ciminal investigations and other matters. History has it that bailiffs lived in this house until the 18th century.

The Bailiff's House is rather an architectural oddity, but is an outstanding example of the Renaissance style of housing so popular at the time. It is decorated with what were called three blind cow eyes. The Bailiff's House is located on the grounds of the Castle of Braine-le-Chateau, a 6 hectare spread complete with ponds, parks and towers. The origin of the castle is still clouded in a bit of mystery since there are no documents left to tell its history. However there was a mill there in 1226 and it is likely the castle was there at that time as well.
