The Aalst town hall and belfry located in Aalst, Belgium date from circa 1225 and is considered to be one of the oldest town halls and belfries in the Netherlands. Although you may confuse it with the Leuven town hall, as there are some similarities, it is actually about two centuries younger. The points of similarity involve the quadrangular floor plan and volume with corner towers. Note its high understructure, a sure sign of its once defending the town.

What is perhaps the most notable thing about the Aalst town hall and belfry is the back façade. It has an early gothic profile and a marvelous stepped gable. You'll notice eight Romanesque arches as well, and the round turrets. This is quite the unique looking building, poised in Grote Markt, ready for you to take pictures. Interesting note: when the town was wiped out in 1380 by Lodewijk van Male, the alderman's house was partially burnt to the ground. Only the east façade was saved from the ruin. In 1407 the front and side façade were rebuilt with the square belfry tower going up in 1460. It contains a carillon. The house burnt down again and once more restoration was done in 1886.
