The many Counts of the Flanders region had a myriad of castles built in principal cities of the county simply because they had to move around a lot to keep law and order. Unfortunately, the Gravensteen/Castle of the Counts is the only one that survived the centuries more or less intact. It's interesting to note there were once three fortified castles built from wood that stood on the site of the Gravensteen. This first stone castle was erected in 1000. In fact you can still see parts of that castle in the chimney and the fireplace. The Gravensteen was built between 1157 and 1191 by Fillips of Alsasse, who died during the Crusades. The opening right above the main entrance gate, in the form of a cross is evidence of his participation in a crusade. It is speculated he had that built around 1177-1178.

The Gravensteen acted as the center of the Count's power during the early middle ages. You can ascertain that by the presence of a donjon (tower) or main keep that allows one a panoramic view of the city. Adjacent to the castle is Veerle Square (Veerleplein) the area where public executions took place. The castle itself has served many purposes over the centuries, including a Mint, the main prison of Gent, and a cotton plant. Beautifully restored, the Gravensteen (now a museum) is well worth touring. You will even find a collection of medieval torture instruments of display.
