The Gent-Sint-Pieters Railway Station is the main railway station in Gent/Ghent and is also considered by some to be the second or even third busiest railway station in Belgium. Of course it depends on what measurements you actually use to make that determination. Once upon a time the main railway station for Ghent was the South railway station erected in 1837. Along came 1913 and the grand world exhibition in Ghent and voila, a new Sint-Pieters railway station came into being. World exhibitions were/are divided into a number of types: universal, and international or specialized. They usually last between 3 and 6 months and countries can hold their own exhibition (fair or expo).

The Gent-Sint-Pieters Railway Station was designed by architect Louis Cloquet and finished in 1912, just before the World Exhibition. Cloquet adopted a more eclectic though still predominantly medieval style, also introducing Renaissance motifs to the station. The Gent-Sint-Pieters Railway Station was classified in1995. Travelers will find this station becoming more and more customer oriented over the next few years, as there is a massive project underway to upgrade and overhaul the station. This project should be totally completed by 2016.
