Ghent University/Universiteit Gent (located in the historic town of Ghent in Flanders) attracts over 30,000 students a year, and has a foreign student population of over 2,200 EU and non-EU citizens. Ghent University/Universiteit Gent is usually known by the abbreviated form UGent and is one of the major universities in Belgium. It has over 130 faculty departments that are divided up into 11 faculties with 6, 400 staff members.

Compared to some of the older, most established universities, Ghent University/Universiteit Gent is a relative new comer on the block. It was founded October 9th, 1817. Just the year prior to this, the King (William I of the Netherlands) proclaimed the establishment of three universities in southern Netherlands. Interesting note: from 1817 until Belgium separated from the Netherlands (1830) all classes were taught in Latin. From 1830 to 1930 it was French, and in 1930 became Dutch. Ghent University considers itself a pluralist university, meaning not connected to any particular religion or ideology.
