Brussels is Belgium in character and design. It is also, as tourists staying in hotels in Brussels soon discover, a blend of cosmopolitan tastes and ancient history. This is the region where Napoleon and Wellington fought. You can visit the Champ de Bataille (Battlefield) near Waterloo or the Butte de Lion, a pyramid of 226 steps topped by a large lion, to look out over the battlefield. Some stay a week to explore the region; others only remain a weekend. Brussels also provides with cobbled streets, parks, churches and shopping centers.
You can shop in the Galeries St. Hubert, the world’s first enclosed and covered shopping arcade built in 1874. If you wander outside the city, to Waterloo go further to Genippe, south of the battlefield to the Museum of Caillou where Napoleon set up his headquarters before the battle. Visit, as well, Gaasbeek to see where the painter Brugel found his landscape.
