Flemish, more properly West and East Flanders, touches the North Sea and the Netherlands. The region, as tourists leaving their hotels in Flemish discover, is rural countryside with art centers, textile towns, battlefields from World War I and port cities. In Tyne Cot, there is a British cemetery while Ieper is surrounded by battlefields. Visit the coastal towns of Oostende or Knokke. For those interested in the big city lights and attractions, however, there is Antwerp.
You should spend more than a weekend. The Flemish region features the ancient village of Brugge (Bruges) with its Gruuthusemuseum or applied arts Museum. It shows how difficult life could be in 15th century Brugge. There is also the tall tower of Church of Our Lady in Damme from which you can see the Netherlands on a clear day. In Antwerp, there are also churches, museums, markets and fortresses to see.
