It doesn't matter if you are in the market for a diamond or not, because you can still visit either the Bruges Diamond House or the Diamond Museum in Bruges, Belgium and spend time with the sparking fire of fine gems. It is said the technique of diamond polishing is attributed to Bruges goldsmith Lodewijk van Berquen in the middle of the 15th century. Prior to this however, in fact as early as 1370, diamonds were a major trading commodity in Bruges. That was even long before they made their appearance in Antwerp or Amsterdam. And there is no question that Bruges was the first diamond city in Europe.

Bruges Diamond house, famous enough on its own, is also noted for where it is located – in a totally restored building called The Sturgeon that was built in 1518. The Bruges Diamond House is a mere 80m from the Market Place. You can also visit the Diamond Museum to find out more about the history of diamonds in Belgium. The museum is located at Katelijnestraat 43, 8000 Brugge.
