De Haan (translated as The Rooster), in West Flanders, is right on the coast of Belgium and has roughly 12,00 year round residents. It's not an overly large municipality, but logs in at 42.17 kilometers squared. There's a quaint legend that a rooster saved a bunch of fishermen is distress by crowing them to a safer place. In a rare flash of foresight, the village forefathers decreed that their skyline should be kept low so many of its totally stunning building are clearly visible. De Haan's structures are in the Belle Epoque (Beautiful Era) style. The period began during the late 19th century and lasted until the first World War. The Belle Epoque was considered to be a golden age as peace reigned between the major powers.

One of the most famous residents of De Haan was Albert Einstein, who called De Haan home for six months after leaving Nazi Germany. De Haan is often referred to as being small, but beautiful and its careful architectural planning intends to keep it that way. You won't find aparment blocks here, but you will find tourists. In fact tourists have been visiting this location since the 22nd of July 1888 when the Hotel du Coq was opened. You'll spend many a pleasant day in this beach resort.
