Visitors to the city of Bruges are immediately enchanted by the work of Michelangelo's Madonna and Child. It was made for the cathedral of Sienna, but two merchants from Bruges (Jan and Alexander Moscroen) brought it to Bruges after one of their business trips to Italy in 1506. Yes, most of Michelangelo's work is in Italy, but not this superb sculpture that has been stolen twice from the Church and returned. You will find the Onze Lieve Vrouwkerk (Church of Our Lady) immediately south of the Gruuthusemuseum. The first thing you will notice is the tower, a staggering 122m high, and which some claim is the tallest in Belgium. That appears to be a matter of debate with many placing it as being the second tallest tower. Work began on the nave and aisles around 1230, the outermost aisles and chapels were added in the 14th and 15th centuries.

Onze Lieve Vrouwkerk attracts a great many visitors because of its medieval character, despite the fact that it does not present a uniform architectural style. It varies from late Romanesque to Scheldt-Gothic to French Gothic. And if that isn't enough, in the 18th century it was overhauled into a more contemporary style. Then in 1900 the wheel of renovation turned once again and efforts were made to return the church to the original medieval styles. Aside from the lovely Madonna by Michelangelo the other major attraction at Our Lady are the magnificent tombstones of Mary of Burgundy and her father Charles of Bold.
