For a really interesting experience, visit the Chapel of the Holy Blood in Bruges, Belgium. It is not just the ONE chapel. It is a double chapel. You'll find the Chapel of the Holy Blood on the Burg Square in Bruges. It was built in the 12th century and then promoted to the rank of Basilica in 1923. If you enter the chapel on the first floor, you will be going in by the "steeghere" – a decorated façade that hides a set of stairs. When it was first built, the façade was late gothic and renaissance styles of the 16th century. It was demolished after the French Revolution and later rebuilt.

Any of the guild statues you see here are those of Flemish counts. The lower part of the chapel is called the Basilius chapel and it is in the original Romanesque style from the 12th-13th century. The church on the first floor is the actual chapel of the Holy Blood and the mural decorations you will see are from a second renovation in the 19th century. The original stained glass windows were taken out after the French Revolution and some of them wound up in the Victoria and Albert museum in London. The silver alter is where the holy relic is resting during the week. The holy relic, the bottle of rock crystal, supposedly containing the blood of Christ, apparently dates back to the 11th or 12th century. Since its arrival in Bruges it has never been opened.
