It's not often you get to see a church preserved almost completely in its original style. The Jerusalem Church in Bruges will appeal to your sense of history the minute you see it. It is really rare to see a church like this Belgium. That is not the only thing that makes this church distinctive either. It is still privately owned. At one time the church belonged to the Adornes family. The Adornes were a family of merchants who moved to Bruges from Genoa, Italy in the 13th century. Their descendants still own the church.

The building got to be what it is today through a series of additions made to the original building. During the 14th century a chapel was built and later extended and rebuilt. The additions and extensions to the church were finally completed in 1470. Some say the design is a copy of the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem. In the middle of the church is the tomb of Anselm Adornes and his wife. The stunning stained glass windows date from 1482 and 1560. Behind the lower altar is a small space that suggests the tomb of Christ.
