The Gruuthuse house and museum is really engaging. It's located behind the Our Lady's church in Bruges, Belgium and would be an excellent stop to add on your trip itinerary. This remarkable mansion belonged to one of the richest families of the medieval city. It is now the home of archeological city museum of Bruges. Interesting note: the very name of the house is a dead giveaway as to why the Gruuthuse family was so important. The old Flemish word for peeled barley or wheat is "gruut". In the middle ages these were the main beer brewing ingredients. And as luck would have it the Lords of Bruges had a monopoly on the sale of beer. Hence they got really rich, really quickly and were dubbed the Lords of Gruuthuse (huse meaning house).

The most famous Lord of Gruuthuse was Lodewijk van Gruuthuse and it's his statue you can see above the lower front façade of the house/palace engraved with Plus est en vous (There is more in you) – his personal motto. In 1628 the former palace of Gruuthuse became a pawn shop, then in 1883 to 1898 it was completely renovated and became the Gruuthusemuseum.
