Tucked away in the northwest corner of the Grote Markt is the lovely Gothic Kortrijk Town Hall built between 1418-1420. It did undergo some renovations in the 16th and 19th centuries, mostly to enlarge it, and in 1962 it was restored to its former glory. The outside of the building is what is of particular interest to many visitors. It is decorated with statues of the Counts of Flanders. On the ground floor of the Town Hall is a stunning Gothic fireplace with statues of the Virgin, local saints and allegorical scenes of justice being meted out. Throughout the Kortrijk Town Hall you will find similar fireplaces – even in the old council chambers. You can almost hear the very walls talk.

On the fireplace in the old council chambers are Charles V in the center, the Vices and some very highly expressive scenes that attempt to depict the unholy influence of women on men. The Alderman's Chambers on the ground floor were used as a court. While in the building you will also see stained glass windows and mural paintings that are evocative of the century they were created in. While in Council Chambers make sure to take in the two topographic maps - the left one a map of the "Kasselrij", the one on the right-hand side represents the city of Kortrijk and its surrounding area in 1641.
