                  Amazonas Details

Amazonas is a state in the northwestern corner of Brazil. It covers 1.6 million square kilometers, making it bigger than any other South American country except Argentina. However, outside of the capital, Manaus, it is sparsely populated. The big attractions for people who go to budget hotels in Amazonas are the rainforests, the wildlife, and the Amazon River and its tributaries. The scenery is absolutely spectacular. From Manaus you can take tours that last for a few hours or several days. The rainforest has over 250 species of mammals and 1100 species of birds, not to mention a vast array of reptiles and amphibians. The rivers have over 2000 species of fish, including piranha and a type of catfish big enough to swallow a man whole. If you go during the rainy season when the Amazon is in flood, you can actually take a canoe around the treetops of the forest canopy. In the city of Manaus there are several interesting sites. The old Colonial Zone takes you back to the 19th century. The magnificent Teatro Amazonas has been restored and presents full scale productions. At the Mercado Adolfo Lisboa you can see beautiful wrought ironwork, as well as every type of fish caught in the big rivers. Also be sure to see the Instituto Geografico e Historico do Amazonas with its excellent museum and library, and the Zoo, which has about 300 Amazonian animals.
