The Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Penha Church is a popular spot for Brazil tourism and for native Brazilians alike. Situated on a high rocky bluff, the church can be seen for many miles. A church was first built on this site in 1635 by a Portuguese seaman. The most famous part of this church is the 365 stairs leading up to the church. The stairs are carved right out of the rock. Some pilgrims who have this church on their list of things to do in Brazil, climb the stairs on their knees.
The church is the gathering place of many pilgrims, especially in October. There is a House of Pilgrims at the church where people can leave written vows and light votives. The church’s interior has a simple beauty with one altar in the main chapel. The altar of the original church is in the back. This church’s rich history and religious meaning make it one of the important sights to see in Brazil.
