Since 1565, the Sao Bento Monastery has sat on the hill overlooking Guanabara Bay. Brazil tourists may find peace, prayer and daily activities led by the monks at the Monastery of Saint Benedict of Rio De Janeiro. The two main activities of this monastery are the Eucharist with Gregorian Chant and the daily celebration of the Devine Office. The monastery is also home to several other organizations including: Saint Benedict College, a theological school and, a retirement home.
The beautiful architecture of the monastery is one of the reasons that the monastery should be on your list of things to do in Brazil. The monastery has been compared to a museum and reflections of its long history are seen throughout its current design. The outside is rather simple, yet beautiful, and the inside is elaborately decorated. The monastery with its rich history and remarkable architecture make Sao Bento Monastery an important part of Brazil tourism.
