The city of Sao Paulo was founded by the Jesuits in 1554 on the site of the Patio do Colegio. Today, the Patio do Colegio is a Jesuit church and school. The church is in the sober Mannerist style that was typical of the 17th century. The museum at the Patio do Colegio contains more than 600 items including colonial artwork, altarpieces, sculptures, and documents. Two people are particularly honored in the museum. One is Jose de Anchieta who inaugurated the Patio do Colegio and the other is Antonio Vieira who was an important Jesuit figure.
