Zoo Sofia

Founded in 1888, Sofia Zoo is the oldest Zoo in Bulgaria, as well as the biggest, with more than 1,100 animals spanning more than 200 species. Originally built to showcase a rare Black Vulture caught by the royal family of Bulgaria, the Zoo grew rapidly and soon needed a larger ground for animals such as bears and lions. In 1984, the Zoo was relocated to its current location south of Sofia. Business hours are 9 am to 7 pm during the summer and 9 am to 5 pm in the winter. Other places to visit in the city of Sofia include the National Museum of History, Boyana Church, and the National Art Gallery, to name just a few.
