Founded in 1888, Sofia Zoo is the oldest Zoo in Bulgaria, as well as the biggest, with more than 1,100 animals spanning more than 200 species. Originally built to showcase a rare Black Vulture caught by the royal family of Bulgaria, the Zoo grew rapidly and soon needed a larger ground for animals such as bears and lions. In 1984, the Zoo was relocated to its current location south of Sofia. Business hours are 9 am to 7 pm during the summer and 9 am to 5 pm in the winter. Other places to visit in the city of Sofia include the National Museum of History, Boyana Church, and the National Art Gallery, to name just a few.
The Zoo is currently located south of central Sofia, east of the National Museum of History. If you are planning to visit, there are a number of four- and five-star hotels in Sofia, as well as discount hotels for the shoestring-budget traveler.
