Mount Vitosha is the majestic mountain at the base of which lies the present-day city of Sofia. Rising to nearly 7,000 feet, the peak (known as "Black Peak" in Bulgarian) is now the site of a weather station, while the rest of the mountain has been a national park since 1934. The mountain also offers excellent skiing and alpine sports, as it is covered by snow more than 150 days a year. Don't forget to see some of the wonderful sights in Sofia, such as St. Sophia Church, the National Museum of History, and Boris Gardens.
Located on the southern outskirts of the city, Mount Vitosha is just about 20 kilometers away from downtown Sofia . If you are planning a visit, there are a number of four- and five-star hotels near to the mountain and in Sofia, as well as discount hotels nearby for the shoestring-budget traveler.
