Known as the "Apostle of Freedom," Vasil Levsky was a prominent leader in the fight to free Bulgaria from Ottoman rule. The monument that bears his name was was first planned in 1873, upon his hanging by the Ottoman rulers, but due to lack of funding wasn't completed until 1895. The monument features a bas-relief portrait of Levsky, and is supposedly built on the very spot where Levsky was hanged.
