The monument that bears his name was was first planned in 1873, upon his hanging by the Ottoman rulers, but due to lack of funding wasn't completed until 1895. The monument features a bas-relief portrait of Levski, and is supposedly built on the very spot where Levski was hanged. Some of the other monuments to see in the city of Sofia include: the Monument to the Unknown Soldier, Tsar Osvoboditel Monument, and the Monument to the Soviet Army. Vasil Levski Monument is located close to the city center, across from the famous Alexander Nevsky Cathedral.
