Formerly the Roman city of Odessos, today Varna boasts one of the largest antique buildings in the Balkans with the ruins of the Roman Themae. The bath house occupied more than 7,000 m2 and was built around the 2nd or 3rd century A.D., with rooms for cold-water, lukewarm water, and hot water baths. The glories of ancient Roman engineering are clearly revealed here, as giant furnaces would heat both water and air to be carried to the appropriate hall via ceramic pipes.
