Literature lovers and those who adore eccentric personalities should stop by La Chascona in Santiago, Chile. The home of Nobel Prize winner Pablo Neruda is a popular stop for anyone strolling through Santiago. This was the home of Neruda and his first wife, Matilda. Designed partially by the poet himself, the home is uniquely created to resemble that of a ship. La Chascona is located at the bottom of San Cristobal Hill and was built in 1955. The home is full of paintings and relics from Neruda’s past which display his many loves including a rather impressive doll collection. Guided tours are available and will give guests information on the poet’s life as well as his many works.

Pablo Neruda led a very active and interesting life being both poet and politician. And while his activities and support for the Communists and then Socialists parties may be controversial, his works are still greatly admired. Fans and followers of Neruda can visit La Chascona which now serves as a museum and reminder of the man.
