In Chile the appeal of the railroad has been declining with the advent of more efficient cars and numerous airports coming into operation. In an attempt to revive the lack of interest in traveling by rail renewed significance in the Estacion Central. Opening in the early 1900s and designed by Gustave Eiffel, The Estacion Central is a well known structure. A neighborhood was built around the station with the same name. A shopping center is adjacent and bus terminals are nearby to take travelers to their destinations.
Estacion Central is the only operating station in Chile. While passenger lines no longer serve Northern Chile, travelers are able to reach the other parts of Chile. The station is located near the capital city of Santiago which makes departure and arrival convenient and easy. Estacion Central was deemed a national monument keeping it safe from being demolished and ensuring a continued presence in Santiago.
