For a touch of the macabre tourists visiting Santiago should stop by the Cementerio General de Santiago. After Chile won its independence in 1820, Bernardo OHiggins set aside 85 hectares that would become the Cementerio General de Santiago. The grounds of the cemetery are the resting place for all but two of Chiles presidents, those being Gabriel Gonzalez Videla and Augusto Pinochet. Palm trees and other trees surround the Cementerio General de Santiago drawing a contrast of life and death. Intricately decorated mausoleums and life-like statues are spread throughout the grounds. The Cementerio General de Santiago even has a memorial to those who went missing under the presidency of Pinochet. The Cementerio General de Santiago is a great place to visit for those with an interest in history and architecture. This sight makes for a surprisingly pleasant excursion when the other area of Santiago becomes too full of other tourists.
