    Santa Lucia Hill Park Details

Santa Lucia Hill is a must stop for any visitors to downtown Santiago, Chile. Used for various functions since the Spanish conquest in 1541, Santa Lucia Hill has become very popular among the residents and tourists. The hill was once used as a look out point as the conquistadors moved into the region and was once called Huelen meaning sadness which signifies the day Valdivia took the hill. During the 1800's this hill was used for a cemetery and then the site of Fort Hidalgo. In the later part of the 1800's, Benjamin Vicuna Mackenna decided to change Santa Lucia Hill into something more attractive as he worked to transform the atmosphere for the entire city of Santiago. Today, Santa Lucia Hill is a place of great beauty full of shady trees, fountains, and ornate decorations. The Hidalgo Fort was remodeled and is now open to the public.
