The zoo occupies about 4.8 hectares in this park of 722 hectares. The zoo is centered around San Cristobal Hill. It was founded in 1925, and has over a thousand animals representing more than 200 species including birds and reptiles. Among the indigenous South American animals are condors, vicunas, chinchillas, pumas, guanacos, and jaguars. The Jardin Zoologico has recently been renovated, and is surprisingly diverse.
You will find that the Parque Metropolitano has a lot to offer. There are two outdoor swimming pools to help you escape the heat, and a beautiful botanical garden to stroll through. You can ride the Funicular, which dates back to 1925. You can also take the much newer cableway. It will take you to the top of San Cristobal, where there is a 72 foot (22 m) tall statue of the Virgin Mary which is illuminated at night. You will have a spectacular view of Santiago from a lookout point on San Cristobal.
