Hotels in Talca
Visitors staying at budget hotels in Talca, Chile, find that it is a good jumping off point for several excellent excursions. These follow the valley of the Rio Maule to the post of Constitucion, about 250 km to the west. However, Talca has some interesting sites of its own for visitors to see. Talca is a regional capital with plenty of services, and good shopping along Calle 1 Sur. Set apart from this busy main thoroughfare is the Plaza de Armas, a shaded, tranquil spot with bougainvilleas, magnolias, and jacarandas. Here you can see a collection of statues taken from Peru as spoils of war in 1881.Â
The Neo Gothic Cathedral on the square is worth a visit because of its beautiful Belgian stained glass windows. Two bishops are buried beneath the main altar. A block east of the square is the Museo OHigginiano. This elegant colonial building was once the home of Bernardo OHiggins, the legendary Liberator of Chile. It was here that the Chilean Declaration of Independence was signed in 1818. The museum has a large collection of historical documents, art, coins, and antique furniture. The Museo Bomberil Benito Riquelme is a real find for firefighting buffs. It is full of antique fire engines and other firefighting equipment.
