One of the most culturally and historically rich attractions in all of China, Beijing’s Forbidden City is required visiting for any tourist wishing to get the most out of his or her visit to the country. The City was for many years the home to the Emperor and his court, and as such, served as the center of the Chinese government. Today, it is widely celebrated for its beautiful and intricate architecture, and its massive collection of ancient artwork and artifacts. The Forbidden City was declared one of UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites in 1987.

The city itself consists of 980 buildings, each of which is worth a visit. Chief among them are the famous Pavilion of Prince Tend, the Yellow Crane Pavilion, the Meridian Gate, and the Gate of Divine Might. Those with a spiritual bent might also enjoy visits to the various halls throughout the city, including the Hall of Supreme Harmony, the Hall of Central Harmony, and the Hall of Preserving Harmony. There is no shortage of things to do or see in China’s Forbidden City and it is absolutely essential for any traveler to see at least once.
