One of the more impressive Gates in all of the Forbidden City, the Gate of Divine Might is situated to the North of the City. It offers quite a bit of political history and heritage of the region and as such shouldn’t be missed by the Beijing tourist who is into that sort of thing. The Gate was originally called the Black Tortoise Gate and served as the northern entrance to the Imperial Palace, but when the Kangxi Emperor took the throne, he changed it for reasons of a long-standing superstition. The new name was meant to reflect the might of his military prowess.

An impressive example of ancient wooden architecture, the Gate of Divine Might is worth a visit from tourists wishing to learn more about the history of the Chinese court. The Gate also provides immediate access to the rest of the famous Forbidden City, as well as Jingshan Park to the north.
