The largest of the Forbidden City’s many imposing Gates, the Meridian Gate is located to the south of the City and is a fine example of ancient Chinese design and architecture. For any tourist visiting the Forbidden City, it is a must-see attraction, and indeed is so massive that it would be hard to miss. The Gate prominently features five arches, the central one of which was traditionally reserved for the passage of the Emperor himself with a few notable exceptions.

The Gate contains its own Palace of sorts, with a massive pagoda-style structure that connects the two outer arches and their pavilions. The Gate is the main point of access to many of the most famous attractions of the Forbidden City, such as Tiananmen Square to the South, and the Gate of Supreme Harmony to the North. Visitors who are looking to understand more about ancient China and the lifestyle of its citizens would be well served to take a visit to this famous Beijing attraction.
